Surviving the First Dance – Ten Tips by Meredith Stead

Most couples intend to dance the traditional first dance, but most of them also know nothing at all about dancing! So as the big day approaches their sense of panic increases. Avoid anxiety by following a few easy tips.

1. Plan ahead: You’re planning everything else associated with your wedding, why not your first dance? Ideally you should begin practicing 6 to 12 months ahead of time.

2. Turn to professionals: Learning to dance is surprisingly painless. If you can’t afford private lessons at a local studio, look around for group classes (high schools, colleges and community centers often offer courses). Or, buy an instructional videotape -learn at home and avoid the worry of looking awkward in front of others.

3. Have options: If you are undecided about your first song, or can’t pick one, check the list of wedding dance songs available on this site. Try practicing to two or three different songs that both of you like, and choose the one that feels most comfortable.

4. Less is more: You need not dance to the entire song (remember, dance professionals don’t). Your DJ can cut the song or your band can play a shortened version…..or you can even just have it fade out. Bottom line: you’ll look better dancing for two minutes and doing five terrific moves, than dancing for five minutes and doing twelve poorly executed moves.

5. Decide on a song version: Once you’ve picked a song, make sure your DJ or band knows how you want to hear it. For instance, don’t assume your band will play the song just like the Frank Sinatra CD you’ve been practicing to. It’s a good idea to give them a copy of the version you like, or to get a recording of their version, so that you are practicing to “the real deal.”

6. Think about where you’re dancing: If your wedding will be outdoors, install a dance floor – it’s pretty hard to spin in mud. Or on grass. If the dance floor at your reception hall is smaller than your bathroom, maybe you’d better rethink that waltz – it takes up lots of space. Try to practice in a space that’s similar in size to your reception hall.

7. Think about what you’re wearing: If you have a mermaid dress you’ll look terrific. You’ll also be taking very tiny steps…. bear that in mind when you plan the first dance. Similarly, if you have an off-the-shoulder gown you won’t be able to lift your arms over your head………consider that before you put in all those spins.

8. And speaking of what you’re wearing: practice your dancing as if it’s the big day. Grooms: wear a jacket and dress shoes. Brides: wear a long skirt, (unless you’re planning that mini-wedding dress!) and your actual wedding shoes. This will accomplish two things: it’ll break your shoes in, and it will give you a sense of security about your ability to manage them come the actual reception. If you’re worried about getting them dirty, protect them with an old pair of athletic socks.

9. Don’t expect perfection: Nobody at your reception is anticipating that the two of you will put on a show. You’re not a professional dance team – and if you are, why are you reading this?! While the two of you are learning and practicing, you are bound to make the occasional mistake. Just stop, talk it out, and try again.

10. Express yourself: Know your own comfort level, and that of your groom. If you don’t like a song, don’t dance to it! If you don’t like a certain move your instructor shows you, say so. (Be polite, though!) It is, after all, your day and your dance. If you are happy and comfortable you will look wonderful, so that should be your goal.

With the recent passing of singer Whitney Houston (1963-1012) we take a look back at our favorite hits by this legendary artist:

  3. Greatest Love Of All (1986): Originally recorded by George Benson in 1977 for the Muhammad Ali film “The Greatest”.
  4. I Wanna Dance With Somebody (1987):A monster in the clubs at the time, now a firm wedding favorite.

  13. Where Do Broken Paper Hearts Go? (1988): Classic sing-a-long love song.
  14. I Believe In You In & Me (1996): From “The Preacher’s Wife” soundtrack but originally recorded by the Four Tops in 1983.
  15. One Moment In Time (1988): 1988 Olympics theme.
  16. I Have Nothing (1992): A classic soul ballad.
  17. My Love Is Your Love (Jonathan Peters Mix)(1999): A club anthem.
  18. Love Will Save The Day (1988):#1 Dance song of the summer of 1988.

  20. If I Told You That (1998): Often overlooked duet with George Michael.

Wedding Mistakes You Can Avoid

Here’s a story for you – the names have been changed to protect the innocent:

Susan and Mark had always wanted a unique location for their wedding reception.  They found the perfect wedding location near the couple’s home overlooking the Connecticut River Valley.  The view was magnificent, the garden area was beautiful and reception area, with the view, was tented…. what more could you ask for with a June wedding!!

The deposit was paid; the entertainment, the caterer and photographer all where reserved for the day.  Then they started looking at churches…

The churches in the area would not agree to marry them because they weren’t members.  The one church that could was already booked on their date. The only available place that an officiant could use was a old school house with air conditioning.  It seemed as if the facility grounds would have to serve as Ceremony location.

Their parents were outraged that Susan & Mark weren’t getting married in a Catholic church.  The couple faced the painful decision of dealing with parental rage and an ugly, overheated old school house or losing a large chunk of change in lost deposits.

If you are planning a ceremony in a location separate from your reception, make sure you can find an available, acceptable church or space BEFORE you book your facility.

If you have your heart set on a particular church, minister or officiant, make sure that they are open before you put down your deposit.  Otherwise, you can find yourself facing some tough decisions.

But there’s more to the story… Of course, Susan & Mark imagined their wedding day on a perfect sunny June afternoon.  Instead, they ended up with a monsoon.

The Ceremony had to moved under the tent, which meant the caterer could not set up the way they wanted. They didn’t have sides for the tent, so the guests got soaked.  The entertainment moved onto the tiny dance floor to protect the equipment, which meant there was no room for dancing.  Everyone slogged through the mud for five miserable hours.

Before you chose your location, consider the worst case scenario.  Rainstorm?  Heatwave?  Snow?

Make sure your comfortable with your ceremony and reception location in EVERY possible situation, so whatever Mother Nature throws at you, you can still hold up.  Remember, you cannot fight Mother Nature, so if everything is going pear-shaped you HAVE to go with the flow…..

If you watch out for these mistakes, having an unforgettable wedding day, where everything runs smoothly and you have the time of your life is almost assured.

Focus On What Is Important – Your Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment Choice

Your true love got down on his knees and asked you to marry him. Barely able to get the words out, you say “I Will”.   That is but the first of many choices you must make when planning a wedding.  So many people get caught up in the buying frenzy of wedding planning, that they lose sight of the thing that really matters.

Choosing your Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment should not be one of the final details.  In a recent survey of brides-to-be, they ranked choosing their wedding photographer more than twice as important as their Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment.  Let us think about this – sure, wedding photography is important when it comes to capturing the moment.  If your photographer didn’t show up – the wedding and reception would go on just as planned. Without your Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment – things come to a screeching halt.  People would leave soon after dinner without the musical entertainment of your Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment.  So why is it that people pay $3,000-$5,000 on average for a wedding photographer and they look to pay only $800 for a bargain disc jockey?

Here is some food for thought. The average New England banquet facility charges around $75/pp for the meal.  With an average wedding comprised of about 125 guests, that’s over $9,000 in meal cost. The 18% gratuity on that alone is nearly $2,000.  A top-quality Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment would cost you between $1,500-$2,000.  That’s less than the gratuity on the meal!

Remember that $75/pp meal will only occupy guests for less than 2 hours out of the average 5 hour reception.  Your Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment is responsible for everything from when guests arrive until the end of the night. Your banquet staff will disappear into the background.  Their job is done soon after the meal service is complete.   It is time for your Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment to bring the event to a party atmosphere.

Let’s look at your wedding budget for a minute.  The difference between a low-end disc jockey and a true top-notch professional Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment is less than $1,000. What other items in your wedding budget can be eliminated to facilitate obtaining a better wedding reception entertainer?

Printed Napkins – $150
Cake Knife Set – $75
Toast Glasses – $75
Ice Sculpture – $250
Floral Centerpieces – $40/table = $600 (can be replaced with inexpensive votive candles)
Wedding Favors – $250

Not one of these items would be missed if they were not present at your New England wedding reception.

Without the best available Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment, your party could be a flop from the moment people walk in.  We’ve all been to events where the Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment plays “Kenny G” music throughout cocktail and dinner as if guests are not supposed to notice that they are just playing the same CD.  We’ve gone to events where the Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment plays the same music in the same order as the last person’s wedding without any regard to the crowd or what they are reacting to or not reacting to.   There is even a National Wedding DJ selling copies of his ultimate wedding playlist currently as if every wedding is exactly the same!  At the DJ Network – we never treat your wedding as if it were “just another wedding.”  We will always work with you to personalize your experience to make it uniquely your own.

Choose wisely and make sure your New England wedding budget keeps emphasis on the important things that will guarantee you a successful New England wedding reception and not one where guests stare at their wrist watches looking for an opportunity to sneak out early due to lack of quality Connecticut Wedding DJ Entertainment.

The $600 DJ – Ten Reasons To Hire A Professional DJ

It’s that time of the year, when Bridal Show season is coming to an end…. and it certainly has been an interesting few months.

We did a number of large and small Bridal Shows throughout the New England area and noticed that couples are looking for quality services even though budgets may be tight.  The consensus seems to be that many are realizing that the “right” entertainment WILL make the difference for this once in a lifetime event.

Still others, too many it seems, have decided to take the risk and use “a friend of a friend” or the “cheapest” or worst, the “discount dj” with the “special offer” at the Bridal Show.

So, if you’ve been out shopping for a DJ, with the assumption that every DJ is pretty much alike, and you find someone that is 1/2 the price of other area DJs…. this article is for you….

What a bargain!!

Here is what you might expect from them:

1) They will probably not return your calls when you’re frantically trying to reach them 2 weeks before your wedding

2) Your first dance?  That will be the one song they were meaning to get, but they didn’t get around to it.  Would you like to dance to something else?

3) They have a website – but it’s been under construction for months and when it comes online, there really isn’t much more than a photo and a couple sentences worth of content.

4) They will hide their cheap poor quality gear behind a large self-promoting sign at your wedding.

5) Their computer will lockup during your dance with your father.  No backup – so please wait 5 minutes while it reboots.

6) Wireless microphone?  Yeah, it works, but you have to be standing right next to the DJ. All you hear is crackling when you try and use it at the head table for your toast.

7) The DJ that had 10 years experience won’t be the one who shows up to your wedding – it will be his 16 year old son.

8) Please be sure to stand right in front of the DJ speakers if you want to hear what is being said over the microphone.  They have 15 year old speakers placed on the ground and not on speaker stands.

9) Tux?  Isn’t a shirt and tie close enough?

10) Oh, you said you DIDN’T want to hear the Electric Slide?  They thought your guests would like it as well as all the other songs that you told him NOT to play.

So go ahead… book the cheapest DJ you can find… remember the old idiom: You Get What You Pay For!
