People are Spending Big Bucks on Weddings

How big? According to MSNBC, the average cost of a wedding last year was over $28,000! Since couples want to make their big day as memorable and as personal as possible, that’s where creative entrepreneurs can get in on a little of that wedding budget! Here are a few examples.

* At Wedding Ring Workshop USA, couples design and make their own rings with the help of an experienced jeweler! The 84-year-old owner says they’re not really selling rings, they’re selling an experience. Couples have a great time and create a lifelong memory. The daylong process includes lunch, a disposable camera to document the experience, and a bottle of champagne at the end.

* Nora Donston started A Butterfly Affaire as a way of enhancing the wedding experience. She farms beautiful monarch butterflies and then carefully and safely packages them in individual boxes. They’re healthy when they arrive, and guests can release the butterflies together. Her business has become very popular because it’s a beautiful and hassle-free alternative to throwing rice or releasing birds or balloons and it’s a lot more environmentally friendly!

* Chris Easter of Kansas City, Missouri found a goldmine by focusing on the often neglected half of the wedding couple: the groom. He started The Man Registry with his two brothers-in-law. Customers can register and put camping equipment, video games, and tool sets on their wish list. The Web site also features articles for men, which answer all their questions about the Big Day.

It’s Time To Be Unique

Take tradition and throw it out of the window. White table cloths? Why not green and yellow? Add a splash of color to your wedding. Drape the walls with tapestries of various colors. Turn tradition upside down – create a separate lounge area with leather couches and relaxed seating. Cigar bar? Who needs table numbers when you can use song lyrics or vacation names? Forget floral center pieces. Put a couple vintage photographs of your family on the table instead. Peruse the bridal magazines for inspiration and photographer’s websites for ideas. Work with a wedding planner. Ask your artsy sister or creative aunt to help out. Think out of the box and create a unique event all your own.
